CEI and Over 100 Participants Issue Guidance for Responsible Integration of AI in Teaching and Learning

Today, Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) announced the release of the Colorado Roadmap for AI in K-12 Education, with guidance for local school districts and state-level organizations for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning.

The roadmap is the result of months of collaboration by over 100 stakeholders from across the state. AI technology has unprecedented potential to reshape teaching and learning. By integrating AI thoughtfully and responsibly into the classroom, educators can enrich learning experiences, support diverse student needs, and prepare students for the future.

“This roadmap represents the collective insights and expertise of educators, policymakers, industry leaders, community members, and students,” said Colorado Commissioner of Education Susana Córdova. “It underscores our dedication to ensuring that every student in Colorado has access to high-quality, equitable education and is equipped with the skills necessary to not just work but lead and thrive in an ever-evolving world.”

The Colorado Roadmap for AI in K-12 Education is a dynamic resource designed to support local school districts in developing their own approaches to AI integration. It emphasizes flexibility and adaptability, acknowledging the rapid pace of technological change and the importance of continuous learning and improvement.

Key components of the roadmap include:

  • Reshaping Teaching and Learning: Promoting opportunities to elevate academic rigor, foster deeper learning, provide individualized student support, and advance the teaching profession.
  • Advancing Equitable Access for All Learners: Emphasizing student and family engagement, equity and inclusion strategies, and infrastructure and resource allocation.
  • Developing Policy for Transparent and Ethical Use: Offering guiding tenets for school districts and recommendations to support data usage, procurement and disclosure policies, discrimination and harassment, and acceptable student and teacher use.
  • A Call to Action for Statewide Organizations: Prioritizing conditions for school districts to learn rapidly from each other and from early adopters, and collaboration to foster a unified and informed approach to AI in education.

The roadmap also addresses the challenges associated with AI, such as data privacy, bias, and the role of human interaction in education. By providing practical insights and actionable strategies, the roadmap aims to empower educators and policymakers to leverage AI responsibly and effectively.

“AI is one of the next great frontiers, and Colorado has always been at the forefront of educational innovation,” said Rebecca Holmes, President and CEO of CEI. “CEI is excited to continue learning with and from school and district leaders in shaping how we leverage AI to improve educational systems, enhance the teaching profession, and ensure Colorado’s young people exit K-12 education boldly taking their next steps toward hopeful, equitable, and prosperous futures regardless of their zip code.”
