It’s Time to Change Colorado’s School Accountability System

Nearly a decade ago, our state laid a new foundation for evaluating the success of K-12 schools – a model that has since been replicated across the country. Rather than just judge a school based on its overall proficiency rates on test scores, the Colorado Growth Model took a much-needed step to measure a student’s academic growth from year to year. This assured that schools in Colorado were recognized for the extent to which their students progressed from one grade level to the next and guaranteed growth was part of the formula used to compare schools and districts. By combining measures of academic growth and achievement, Colorado provides every school with a rating. This system provides some information that helps families better understand school test score performance and make more informed choices about where to enroll their children.
